Sergiev Posad und Alexandrov

Moscow — Sergiev Posad — Alexandrov — Moscow

Our steam train is taking you to the largest and most important Orthodox monastery – the St. Sergius Trinity Lavra, located 42 miles northeast of Moscow in the town of Sergiev Posad. This stunning monastery is named after one of Russia’s most venerated saints – St. Sergius of Radonezh – and all year long people stand in line to bow and pray before his remains.

A guided tour will tell you about all the mysteries of the 680-year monastery’s history, which often was at the center of many major political events. The monastery is under UNESCO patronage, and is among Russia’s most visited sights. In the Trinity Cathedral you can see frescos by Russia’s great icon painter Andrei Rublev. Enjoy the typical folklore in front of the church, where among other things matryoshkas, the famous nested wooden dolls, and icons of all sizes are offered.

It is less than an hour to get to Alexandrov, our next today’s destination. In Alexandrov we visit the oldest residence of the Russian Tsars. It is hard to believe that this small town was once a center of the Moscow state. We are amazed not only by the artfully decorated churches, but also by the stories from the times of Ivan IV the Terrible.

On the way back to Moscow, you can discuss your impressions of the day with your fellow travelers over a cup of tea offered aboard.
